Happy Independence Day! It is America’s 250th Birthday and something to celebrate. However, with that celebration, comes parties and events that contain alcohol and other substances that can not only tempting to the youth, but dangerous.
It is easy for teens to see their parents, family members, older siblings, and friends partaking in the festivities and feel the self-peer pressure to participate. The most commonly used substance we see during this time is alcohol. It is easy for a teen to grab a beer, hard seltzer, or any other alcoholic beverage from a cooler without notice. With the heat levels rising, and little consumption of water, dehydration, along with alcohol, can lead to illness (for both the youth and adults).
Alcohol consumption affects the teenage brain by compromising the growth of the prefrontal cortex, which is not fully developed until the age of 25. They are not ready to make vital and important decisions on days like the 4th of July. Shooting off fireworks at close range, jumping off a boat into the water, or driving while intoxicated are just a few of the decisions that could be detrimental to their safety!
This weekend is supposed to reach record-high temperatures and the desire to drink more may be prevalent. Have water, sports drinks, and sodas available for those under the age of 21. Before the weekend, start conversations with your teens about the dangers of drinking and the consequences not only for their health and brain development, but the possible legal consequence for both them and you.
There is no reason not to have a fun and safe holiday weekend while having a sober adult watching the teens on your boat, at your barbeques, and at your parties. Remember that New York State has Social Hosting laws and you can be liable for injury to your own child and that of others.
Enjoy the monumental anniversary of our amazing country and be safe! Remember, everything is “By Choice!”
