Ulster County Youth Survey
The Ulster County Youth Survey helps guide prevention efforts by providing real insight into the experiences, behaviors, and challenges facing local youth. Conducted every two years, the survey plays a key role in shaping programs that are relevant, responsive, and effective.
What is the Youth Survey?
In collaboration with the Ulster County Department of Health and Mental Health, Ulster Prevention Council administers a Youth Risk Survey to students in grades 7–12 across the county.
The survey collects anonymous data on a wide range of topics, including substance use, mental health, peer relationships, and other factors that influence well-being. This information helps paint a clearer picture of what young people are experiencing today.

Why It Matters
Prevention starts with understanding. The Youth Survey allows UPC and its partners to identify both risk factors and protective factors within the community, ensuring that programs and resources are aligned with real, current needs.
Rather than relying on assumptions, UPC uses this data to make informed decisions that support meaningful, long-term impact.
How the Data is Used
Survey results are combined with other local and regional data to guide planning, program development, and community strategies. This helps ensure that prevention efforts are targeted, age-appropriate, and grounded in evidence.
- Identifying trends in youth behavior and perception
- Measuring risk and protective factors across the county
- Informing program selection and development
- Supporting grant funding and community initiatives
- Evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs
